When Should You See Your Doctor For Peripheral Neuropathy?

Friday, October 20, 2023

So you have peripheral neuropathy...or maybe you are just concerned that you may have peripheral neuropathy.  Whatever your current status, it is important that you get a diagnosis as soon as possible because treatment is much easier in the early stages of the disease.

That being said, our real goal is to give you the tools to manage and treat peripheral neuropathy yourself...Patient Directed Care!

So, when should you go see a doctor?

There are really 3 Reasons To See The Doctor Today:

  • If You Want To Confirm You Have Peripheral Neuropathy: Note that this is only valuable if you see a doctor that specializes in peripheral neuropathy.  Or you understand how the diagnosis should be made - namely that you have appropriate symptoms and they can't give you another reason for those symptoms (injury, etc).  The confirmation of the disease is the first step to treatments.
  • If Your Symptoms Are Bad Or Just Getting Worse: Whether the symptoms are really bad and interfering with life or you are finding the symptoms are progressing quickly, both are good reasons to be seen. Your goal: To see if there are any additional problems that can be treated that may be aggrevating your neuropathy.
  • If You Want To Learn More About Your Unique Peripheral Neuropathy: Since peripheral neuropathy is similar to a fingerprint and completely unique to each individual, it is important that you (as the ultimate one planning to TREAT your neuropathy) understand as much as you can about your individual disease.

If any of these are correct, it is appropriate and recommended to go see a specialist in peripheral neuropathy.
