"Turf toe" is a toe injury that is commonly seen in athletes. It is a sprain of the big toe. It can happen when the toe is forced too far downward or too far upward (like when you stumble on turf). There are varying degrees of sprain and therefore different treatments.
To treat turf toe, RICE (rest, ice, compression and elevation) is usually the first step. Anti-inflammatory medications can also be prescribed. Keeping the to splinted during recovery is very important. This can be done with a toe splint or by simply wearing stiff shoes that limit the flexability of the toes.
It's important to get this condition treated, because it can become a chronic problem that can only be corrected with surgery.
