This Holiday season, help provide shoes to children in need in Utah County. In Latin culture, "El Dia de Los Tres Reyes Magos," Three Kings Day, is celebrated on January 6th, marking the culmination of the holiday season. This holiday commemorates the arrival of the three kings that came bearing gifts to honor baby Jesus.
On the eve of Three Kings Day, children put out their old shoes to be filled with gifts, as well as a shoe box filled with grass for the kings' camels to eat. On top of the grass, they place a list of gifts they wish for. The three kings will leave gifts to children who have been well behaved. The next day children recieve their gifts and there is a feast featuring "Rosca de Reyes," Kings' Sweetbread. This traditional treat is round with an empty middle (representing a crown) and decorated with candied fruit.
For the last several years, Centro Hispano of Utah County has accepted monetary donations to provide children with shoes during the celebration of Three Kings Day. Low-income parents apply by providing income verification and attending an educational workshop of their choice. At the celebration, parents receive vouchers to a local shoe store, which can be redeemed for new shoes for their children ages 2-12.
This year, our goal is to provide shoes for 300 children in Utah County.
