On Tuesday, February 25, Michelle Obama presented her new guidelines for food advertising in schools.  Sugary beverages and fatty snacks will no longer be available in school vending machines. Low calorie options such as fruit/vegetable juice, bottled water, and in some cases low/no calorie soda

will still be available. As far as marketing goes, schools aren’t allowed to advertise anything they are not allowed to sell. Posters and other disposable advertisements in schools will no longer promote unhealthy options.  Advertisements like Coca-Cola scoreboards will need to be replaced over time.

What does this mean for feet? A healthy diet, particularly the avoidance of diets high in sugar, help prevent against diabetes and other conditions that affect foot health.  If this policy can decrease sugar consumption among our youth, we may see a similar decrease in diabetic foot complications.
